Overview
On Thursday, November 25, 2004, EURIM (The European Information Society
Group) hosted a CESG/BWG Government Biometrics Workshop at Portcullis
House, Westminster, London. The purpose of the event was to highlight
the issues involved when considering the implementation of large-scale
biometric applications, such as e-passports or ID Cards.
Various
UK BWG members which included representatives from Government departments
and internationally renowned biometrics experts delivered presentations
on the key issues involved such as human, social and legal considerations,
functionality and performance requirements and security concerns.
A case study session was also provided, examining real experiences
and lessons learnt from biometric systems currently deployed in the
UK and elsewhere.
The morning session provided a fast-track overview of the key issues
for attendees only able to stay for a short while. The afternoon
session examined these key issues in a little more detail, with
a corresponding gain in understanding for those who were able to
stay longer at the event.
