Security Levels

Minimum Security Level

The telecoms industry aims to adopt a minimum security level by Autumn 2008. This security level will apply to all telecoms operators wishing to offer or use shared facilities in the access network, and will help to ensure that the security of all telecoms operators’ services are protected from a basic failure in a single operator.

Standard Security Level

The standard security level is currently in definition but is intended as an increment to the minimum security level, and as an equivalent to the previous PSTN service. Government and some commercial organisations will require assurance of this security level.

Work is progressing to define the purpose and content of the standard assurance process, and to develop good practice guidance to assist compliance. The project aims to publish the standard security level controls and guidance towards the end of 2008.

Enhanced and Higher Security levels

The assurance process for these will be the existing CTAS scheme.
