CAPS helps private sector companies to develop cryptographic
products for use by HMG and other appropriate organisations.
CAPS links the cryptographic knowledge of CESG (the national
technical authority for information assurance) with the private
sector's expertise and resources.
CAPS is a service for companies interested in commercial risk
developments for the UK government market. A Consultancy and
Advice contract gives companies access to CESG's knowledge,
skills and experience in the field of Information Assurance,
supplemented by a range of guidance documentation. CAPS vendors
may incorporate appropriate CESG cryptographic or public domain
algorithms in their products and submit them for evaluation
by CESG. When approved, these products may be advertised as
suitable for purchase by HM Government (HMG) as well as the
UK public sector.
What do we mean by Cryptographic
products?
Cryptographic Products use encryption to provide security. Such
products include disk encryptors, link and network encryptors,
secure radio and access control devices. HMG policy sets out
approved standards where encryption is used to safeguard government
protectively marked data.
Why CAPS?
CAPS was introduced to meet the increasing HMG demand for cryptographic
products. It formalises and enhances the services that CESG
has provided over a number of years and which have already provided
a wide range of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products currently
used by HMG. Products developed under CAPS can address all HMG
cryptographic requirements.
CAPS enables products to be cryptographically verified by CESG
to HMG cryptographic standards and formally approved for use
by HMG and other appropriate organisations. For HMG customers,
CAPS provides assured solutions: for CAPS vendors it provides
enhanced opportunities to market their products to government.
