CESG has ceased development and production of Kilgetty, the
software-based disk encryptor. This decision was taken in light
of previously made public announcements that CESG does not wish
to compete with the private sector in the development of IA
products. Please see License to Industry for further details.
The following information is provided for existing users.
The Kilgetty range of software products provides total disk
encryption, for the protection of Government data stored on
PCs, against unauthorised access in the event of loss. All
of the current versions use the Advanced Encryption Standard
(AES) algorithm. During installation, the entire content of
every hard disk in the computer is encrypted, including all
data structures, the operating system, applications and free
space.
Access control is implemented using a touch memory device,
read through the PC serial port, an 8 character User Identity
and a 10 character Password. Once the boot process is complete,
all files and operating system functions can be accessed normally,
as Kilgetty encrypts and decrypts the hard disk data on the
fly.
Using the Kilgetty System Manager, it is possible to configure
Kilgetty to allow multiple users with individual levels of
access. The Kilgetty Local Manager can control which privileges
a user has when accessing the floppy disk drive mode, the
floppy disk material and emergency erase facilities.
Kilgetty products provide disk encryption for both Plug'n'Play
and non Plug'n'Play removable hard disks. Facilities are provided
to produce encrypted floppy disks that are unique to a single
computer or accessible by multiple users on multiple machines.
KILGETTY 2K V1.1 supports trusted USB access via integration
with the KILGETTY System Manager. A USB device can be accepted
or rejected, as determined by the user.
