The Scheme ensures that private sector Information Assurance providers have a good understanding of:
  • Current Government policy and guidance
  • The risk to official systems
  • The techniques available to counter them
To achieve this understanding, CESG:
  • defines the qualifying standards for CLAS approval and ensures that these standards are maintained;
  • provides a programme of information and training for CLAS consultants;
  • publicises the Scheme within the public sector, making potential client departments aware of the availability of accredited consultants;
  • provides advice and guidance to CLAS consultants in support of their work;
  • provides appropriate policy/technical documentation.
All Consultants applying for membership of CLAS are assessed on the basis of a competency framework which relates to the HMG Practitioner Core Competency Profile for the ITPC qualification.

The Scheme offers the benefit of assured advice in line with the latest authoritative guidance.

CLAS consultants are approved to provide Information Assurance advice on systems marked up to SECRET.

CLAS consultants can help you in considering whether your department or organisation could connect to the GSI. All connections to the GSI must be approved by the GSI Accreditation Panel (AP). Accreditation will only be achieved where the organisation can demonstrate that its systems comply with the entry criteria (set out in Annex Bof the GSI Community Security Policy). Organisations may find that they need to seek advice to scope the extent of existing systems and to address connectivity issues before making an application to the AP. They may also need advice where an application to the AP is deemed non-compliant.

For advice on GSI-related issues, CLAS Consultants should contact the Office of Government Commerce via their website: www.ogc.gov.uk.
